Why Copper Stains Your Skin (And Why That’s Kind of Lovely)

Ever noticed a soft green mark on your skin after wearing your favourite Copper Jewels piece? Don’t worry, you haven’t turned into a forest nymph. That’s just copper doing what copper does best: reacting to the world around it.

Pure copper naturally oxidises when it meets moisture, salt, and the natural oils on your skin. This gentle reaction creates copper salts, which can leave a faint greenish tint behind. It’s more likely to happen in warm weather, during exercise, or if you’ve been using lotions or perfumes. It’s totally harmless and it washes off with soap and water.

Some of our collectors see this colour shift as part of copper’s magic. The evolving patina adds character, telling a story of wear, time, and connection.

Prefer to keep things pristine? You can coat the inside of your jewellery with clear nail polish or Renaissance wax to create a gentle barrier. Or just give it a wipe after wear and store it in a dry pouch.

At Copper Jewels, we believe your jewellery should feel alive—shaped by your journey. A little green? That’s just proof it’s walking beside you.

So, while copper may leave a little mark on your skin, it’s a normal process and one of the many quirks that make copper jewellery unique and beautiful.
