This carefully selected Sumi-e kit contains the essential materials needed to explore expressive brushwork, ink tones and traditional painting techniques.

It is ideal for beginners, Copper Jewels workshop participants who would like to continue practising at home, or anyone curious about the quiet simplicity of painting with ink, water and a brush.

• 100 sheets of premium Xuan (rice) paper
• 100 g bottle of liquid Sumi-e ink
• Three traditional Sumi-e brushes in small, medium and large sizes
• Reusable felt painting mat

The felt mat sits beneath the rice paper to help protect your work surface and absorb excess moisture while you paint.

Why You Will Love It

Sumi-e is the art of creating expressive paintings with very few materials. Changes in brush pressure, speed, direction and ink concentration can produce delicate lines, bold marks and beautifully varied tones.

This kit contains the same type of materials used during Copper Jewels Sumi-e workshops, so you can continue practising familiar techniques or begin exploring at your own pace.

Brush Care

Rinse the brushes thoroughly in clean water after use. Gently reshape the bristles into a point and allow the brushes to dry naturally with the bristles pointing downwards or lying flat.

Do not leave the brushes standing in water, as this may damage the bristles and loosen the brush head.

Helpful Tip

Place the felt mat beneath one or two sheets of rice paper before painting. Sumi-e paper is absorbent, so begin with less ink and water than you think you need. You can always add more, but the paper has no reverse gear.
