Wednesday. Halfway there. Time to unwind.

Leave the week behind for a few hours and join us for Midweek Unwind — a relaxed evening of Sumi-e Japanese ink painting at Bag End Studio.

Sumi-e is the traditional art of painting with ink and brush, using simple, expressive brushstrokes to capture the essence of a subject rather than every tiny detail.

Each month we'll explore a different Sumi-e subject or technique, so every class offers something new to discover.

You'll be guided through the brushstrokes and techniques for the evening, have time to practise, and then create your own finished painting.

No drawing or painting experience is necessary.

Your Midweek Creative Escape

These evenings are designed to be relaxed, friendly and beginner-friendly. They're a chance to step away from work and everyday responsibilities, slow things down for a while and enjoy the beautifully unpredictable nature of ink, brush and paper.

Come once, come occasionally, or make Midweek Unwind part of your regular Wednesday routine.

Each class is a standalone session, so you can join us at any time.

What's Included

Ink, paper and all other materials needed for the evening are provided. Sumi-e brushes and painting equipment are available for you to use during the class.

If you already have your own Sumi-e brushes, you're very welcome to bring them along.

Just bring yourself, wear something you don't mind getting a little ink on, and enjoy a relaxing evening of creative play.

Build Your Own Sumi-e Collection

If you'd like to make Midweek Unwind a regular creative habit, consider bringing along a bound watercolour sketchbook or journal.

Each month you can add your new Sumi-e painting to your book, gradually creating your own collection while watching your brushwork and confidence develop along the way.

A sketchbook isn't essential — paper will always be available in class — but it's a lovely way to keep your paintings together and create a personal record of your Sumi-e journey.
