Continue your Sumi-e journey by exploring two of the Four Gentlemen of traditional Japanese ink painting — the elegant orchid and the resilient chrysanthemum. Building on the brush control developed in Part 1, this workshop introduces more expressive brushwork, flowing leaf movements, layered petals, and balanced compositions.
Working step by step, you’ll refine your control of ink and brush pressure while learning how a few carefully placed strokes can convey elegance, strength, and seasonal beauty.

- The symbolism of the orchid and chrysanthemum in traditional Sumi-e
- Creating graceful orchid leaves with confident flowing brushstrokes

Who it’s for
This workshop is ideal for students who have completed Japanese Ink Painting Workshop – Part 1: Bamboo & Plum Blossom or anyone with some basic experience using traditional ink painting brushes. This course is also suitable for beginners.
Class size and pace
Classes are intentionally kept small to allow individual guidance and plenty of practice time.
The workshop follows a relaxed, supportive pace, giving you the opportunity to build confidence with each new technique before progressing to your finished paintings.
By the end of the session, you’ll have completed elegant orchid and chrysanthemum paintings while developing a deeper understanding of traditional Sumi-e techniques.
